About Sisters in Crime

Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 by a group of women mystery writers led by Sara Paretsky. Our mission statement was and is:

“To combat discrimination against women in the mystery field, educate publishers and the general public as to inequities in the treatment of female authors, raise the level of awareness of their contributions to the field, and promote the professional advancement of women who write mysteries.”

Today, Sisters in Crime is 3400 members in 48 chapters world-wide, offering networking, advice and support to mystery authors. We are authors, readers, publishers, agents, booksellers and librarians bound by our affection for the mystery genre and our support of women who write mysteries.

Marie Gerules and Dee Maharg started the Kansas City chapter, Partners in Crime, in 1992. Through the years, the group met at several different locations, beginning with Borders Books on 91st and Metcalf in Overland Park, then a private room at Mission Mall, the library, Mystery Hound in Lenexa, a used bookstore in Overland Park, and finally back at Borders, where it all began. Partners in Crime holds meetings on the second Wednesday of each month except December. At each meeting we host a speaker who is an expert in a field of interest to mystery writers and readers. Past speakers include a forensic scientist, a police detective, a district attorney, a private investigator, and a chief of police, as well as mystery writers such as Nancy Pickard and Jill Churchill.

We welcome new members and guests, so grab a cup of coffee at the espresso bar, pull up a chair, and join us!
